Well, I have never visited Costa Rica, I am married and have three children ranging from 13 to 8. We are thinking of moving to Costa Rica next year after some heavy saving. We are really looking to slow down the pace of life and teach our children by example that you can take control of your life and find adventure. I am looking for advise from either Americans who have relocated to Costa Rica and their experiences and suggestions or Costa Rican residents who can shed some light on their country, culture and suggestions on where to live. I would also like to extend this to anyone who has visited enough to share a few things as well. I would love to live near the coast but am concerned with the schooling for the kids, hospitals, and emergency services. Please take a few minutes and give me all you can give as far as advise, your experiences and suggestions on where to look to relocate to and info on working, safety and friendly, accepting communities. Thank you for taking the time to read this and I hope you find a few more moments to respond to this. ANY helpful info is appreciated!! ~~melody

Tue, August 19, 2008 - 9:41 PMWell cathy, I would love to leave some feedback but I am afraid I have none to leave yet as far as CR and as that I can only get online for a little bit in short spurts as I do not have the internet I can only do so much. I plan to be as interactive as I can. Thanks.....can you offer any info on CR and your favorite parts? -

people come thinking it is a solution to their lives without training or knowledge adn leave having lost everything
I know a lot about CR.
You have to do your own research
You have to be willing to take time on here and other sites to share
When you get there you need to have something to trade fo rfood shelter etc.. you cant work there without some serious qualifications..like you bought a hotel.
Life is mno tsimply free anywhere.. people have to work.
There are no free here is food and shelter and everything else you desire programs there.
Her ein uiS you can get welfare food stamps house share go to goodwill homeschool sell your car go to college in english -

Re: Please stop here and leave feedback!!
Mon, August 18, 2008 - 10:56 AMyou're thinking of relocating to a place you've never even visited?
i would strongly suggest taking some trips to different areas...
and start doing a LOT more research first.
there are a lot of books out there too - that discuss all of the various aspects of relocating to CR.
buy those and start learning about all of the steps and requirements involved.
what i remember from the books I read was that it's highly suggested to go down there in a temporary fashion first.
give yourself a year to decide for sure that it's right for you. -

Re: Please stop here and leave feedback!!
Tue, August 19, 2008 - 9:46 PMOh yes, I know it is CRAZY!! I do not like the idea of moving blindly to such an unknown place but we can not afford to visit and we might be moving down for a job. I have just recently purchased some books and have done as some research on the internet. But I find it to be geared towards tourists and travelers and not for someone who is looking to move there. I have talked to a few friends who have visited and an uncle who works there 6 months out of the year and have been advised to try to find a friendly forum that has either people who have visited or who have relocated themselves. So....here I am. Trying this out!! :) You have great suggestions and I treasure your frankness and honesty as well as your thoughtful suggestions.~Thanks, Melody -

Re: Please stop here and leave feedback!!
Wed, August 20, 2008 - 10:26 AMmelody, you need to do a lot of research before making this decision. it's a bit concerning that you can't afford to go visit there, but are considering uprooting your life to move to a foreign country. are you sure you can't make a trip there first? how would you be able to honestly make an informed decision based on what other people have experienced? everyone is different and travelling to the area is in no way, a comparable situation to moving your family there. for the record, i adore costa rica and have looked into moving there. there is a LOT to know before considering it fully.
by the way - there are a TON of books out there that are geared towards relocating rather than travelling. here are some to get you started:

Sidewalks in the Jungle: What It's REALLY Like to Live and Retire in Costa Rica by Alfred Stites

Re: Please stop here and leave feedback!!
Wed, August 20, 2008 - 10:45 AMalso, have you looked at some expat forums? it would be a lot better than talking to people who have only travelled there!

Re: Please stop here and leave feedback!!
Mon, August 18, 2008 - 11:08 AMMelody:
My frequent visits take me to the Northwest coast of CR. I fly into Liberia and stay at Playa Coco, a small fishing village that is groiwing due to development. Liberia has fine schools and an International airport. It is also 22 kilometers to Playa Coco and very close to other beaches. This may be of some consideration since Liberia has a fine hospital as well.

Re: Please stop here and leave feedback!!
Tue, August 19, 2008 - 9:37 PMThank you so much Lou!! That is a start...a great start. It has just been so hard to know where to start. I have an uncle who works in CR 6months out of the year so I have had a little input from him but he is abusy man and it is difficult to get ahold of him for questions. I also have had some friends who have vacationed there but I was hoping for some advise from people who have visited as well as relovated. I really appreciate your response!!! Thank you, thank you , thank you~Melody
