I know that costa rica is a lovely and peaceful place... I've been there before to my uncle's house in turrialba.
this time... my girl and I are going to head down... stay with him a bit... then head out by rental car to hit up some adventure!
what I want to know is where should we avoid? shady towns where we probably shouldn't stay the night? the wrong highway?
just curious if anyone has any advice or opinions to keep us out of trouble!
but... also... if you have advice where we *SHOULD* go... by all means share it!
thanks in advance!

Re: places *not* to go?
Thu, February 28, 2008 - 4:46 AMokay... having been there... I have a place *not* to go. do not head from la fortuna to monteverde by driving up and over the lake! the roads are seriously dangerous for the last 30km...
oh... and a note to anyone who is heading to CR for the first time and planning to drive or navigate themselves.. note that there are no street signs or addresses in the entire country! the GPS from the rental company was very helpful though! -

There are street markings, though they are hard to find as they are usually painted on the side of a building on the corner. -

Sun, March 2, 2008 - 8:45 AMnot really, it's not that bad - but if you're in that area, do check Santa Teresa and Mal PaĆs -

Re: places *not* to go?
Thu, March 6, 2008 - 4:25 PMSanta Teresa was our first spot when we went and was my fav. Best surf of the trip by far and very chill.
The roads are a trip but we loved it! My mom got us a map before we left and we didn't get lost once. We never ran into a spot that we felt unsafe- everyone was really hospitable. -

Re: places *not* to go?
Sun, March 30, 2008 - 12:36 PMThe best map I found was the National Geographic Adventure Map.
I was a little underwhelmed by Manuel Antonio. Although there's a lot to do around there, and the resorts along the road to MA have spectacular views (If you can afford it, definately stay at one!), but I thought there were plenty of other beautiful beaches. IT's good for tourist shops and restaurants and taking zipline tours and fishing trips and such, but unless you book ahead of time or have a lot of money, you'll be spending the night in Quepos, which is not as interesting and has lots of drug dealers and prostitutes.
The Monteverde area has lots of cloudforest preserves, Santa Elena is one of the nicest by far, and the one named Monteverde is a little overtouristed.
San Jose has some dangerous neighborhoods, so be careful in there. I knew a family who took me around to some restaurants, but you should be careful just wandering around - it's not a great place for tourists. YOu'll want to be in the countryside and beaches anyhow.
